ALGIERS - Algeria has officially contacted the General Secretary of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) to convene "within shortened deadlines" a meeting of the Union’s Foreign Affairs Ministers Council, the Foreign Ministry said Thursday in a communiqué.
“Algeria has officially contacted the Secretary-General of the Arab Maghreb Union, to convene within the shortest deadlines a meeting of Council of Foreign Ministers of AMU,” the statement says adding that “the request was communicated to the Foreign Ministers of the member States of the Union.”.
This initiative “is in line with the intimate conviction and many times expressed by Algeria of the need to revive the building of the Maghreb and the reactivation of its bodies,” said the source.
It is also part of "the conclusions of the last Extraordinary Summit of the African Union of 17 and 18 November 2018 on the institutional reforms of the continental organization, which has given a particular interest to the role of the regional economic communities in integration processes of African countries ".
"The resumption of meetings of the Council of Ministers, on the initiative of Algeria, is likely to introduce a catalytic effect able to revitalize the activities of other bodies of the Arab Maghreb Union," the statement added.
