Messahel GenevaGENEVA - Chairman of the World Economic Forum and former norwegian Minister of Foreign affairs Borge Brende welcomed Wednesday, in Geneva, Algeria’s action for the settlement of conflicts peacefully, underscoring its efforts in Mali and Libya, following a meeting with Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel.

As far as peace in Mali is concerned, everyone is aware of Algeria's efforts in this direction. Algeria has also played an important role in the stability of Libya," said Mr. Brende.

Messahel KohlerGENEVA – Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel told the UN Special Envoy for Western Sahara Horst Kohler on Wednesday in Geneva that Algeria is committed to contribute to the good conduct of the round table on Western Sahara conflict.

Mr. Messahel assured Köhler of Algeria's commitment, as a neighboring country, to contribute to the good conduct of the Geneva round table aimed at relaunching the negotiation process between the two parties to the conflict, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front.

The meeting, which took place shortly before the start of the round table on Western Sahara and to which Algeria is invited as a neighboring and observer country, falls within the framework of UN Security Council Resolution no 2440.

GCTFALGIERS - The Special Adviser on counter-terrorism, organized crime and intelligence at Canada’s Foreign Ministry, David Drake emphasized on Tuesday the “joint” counterterrorism efforts made by Algeria and Canada, and stressed the importance of bilateral solidarity and cooperation to address the terrorist threat in the Sahel and West Africa region.

Welcoming Algeria's continued commitment in this regard, Mr. Drake expressed Canada's appreciation for Algeria's efforts, not only in organizing this important meeting, but also and above all in "generously sharing its vast experience in the fight against terrorism, and its knowledge in this field with the rest of the world".

"Canada thanks Algeria not only for its hospitality and hospitality in hosting such event, but above all, for its commitment and systematically demonstrated contribution, through its knowledge and experience in the fight against terrorism with other countries," he said, reaffirming his country's commitment in this "common fight" with Algeria against terrorism.

For his part, Ambassador El-Haouès Riache, Adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stressed the importance of the second session of the Plenary meeting jointly organized by Algeria and Canada in the area of counter-terrorism and cooperation and capacity-building in the Sahel and West Africa region, as defined in the GCTF work plan until September 2019.

He indicated, in this regard, that it will make it possible to take stock of progress and experiences at the national level, with particular emphasis on the priority themes, namely: The fight against the financing of terrorism, the return of foreign terrorist fighters, border security management, police cooperation, national plans to prevent violent extremism, as well as the integration of a gender perspective in counter-terrorism interventions.

"We will address essential and crucial issues for the stability and security of the West African region, in the common struggle for peace and stability in the Sahel-Sahel region but also in this neighbouring region (West Africa) and against terrorism and its various expressions," Riache said at the opening of the 2nd plenary session of the GCTF.

This session will address, for the first time, the role of women in combating these scourges, and their experiences with terrorist organizations, as well as the development of gender-sensitive policies and programmes.

More than 100 experts in the fields of preventing and combating terrorism and violent extremism representing GCTF member countries, countries in the West African region, as well as international and regional organizations including the United Nations, the African Union (AU), the League of Arab States, the Islamic Cooperation Organization, the European Union (EU), Afripol, Europol, Interpol, are participating in this GCTF meeting and the workshop on "Police Cooperation among West African Countries".

The first plenary meeting of the working group on capacity building in West Africa, held in Algiers in October 2017, reviewed implementation, cooperation and capacity building efforts in the priority areas identified by GCTF members.

 

Messahel USAALGIERS – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdelkader Messahel, met on Thursday November 29th in Algiers US Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale, who is on a two-day working visit to Algeria.

The visit of the senior American official to Algeria, which comes within the framework of the regular political consultations between the two countries, "enabled both sides to proceed to an evaluation of the good relations linking the two countries and to an in-depth exchange of views on the situation in the sub-region," said a Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

MFA AlgiersALGIERS - Algeria has condemned the murder of Saudi citizen Jamal Kashoggi, while expressing its "conviction" that Saudi justice will shed light on this case, said Sunday in a Statement, Abdelaziz Benali Cherif, spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE).

"Algeria, which is linked to Saudi Arabia through close relations of brotherhood and cooperation and shares a common destiny with it, expresses its conviction that Saudi justice will be able to shed light on this murder," said the MFA spokesman.
