Lamamar Bankimon 280916Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ramtane Lamamra was received by Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-Moon, to whom he conveyed a verbal message from president of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, announced Wednesday the Foreign Affairs Ministry in a communiqué.


The meeting took place in the presence of Vice-Secretary General Jan Eliasson, Chef de Cabinet Edmond Mulet, Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Tayé-Brook Zerihoun, Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Christopher Ross, and ambassador Sabri Boukadoum, Algeria's Permanent representative to the UN, the same source said.

Lamamra hailed "excellent overall cooperation relations between Algeria and the UN," highlighting "major achievements" witnessed by Algeria under the leadership of President Bouteflika, "including democratic advances provided by the Revised Constitution, in addition to the economic, social and cultural fields," the communiqué added.

For his part, the UN SG thanked Algeria, "a key African country, for its support to the UN, constructive role regionally and internationally, and major initiatives in favour of peace, security and sustainable development."

The UN official entrusted Lamamra with conveying "his deep feelings of respect and consideration to President Bouteflika, and his recognition to Algeria for the support it provided him with during his two mandates."

The meeting took place was then broadened to several issues in the UN agenda, mainly Libya, Mali, climate change and SDGs, the ministry stated.

Ban expressed his "gratitude" to Algeria for its support to the Western Sahara negotiation process led by the UN.
