energies renouvelables dzALGIERS- A national and international invitation to tender for the production of 4,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity from renewable energy sources will be launched soon, as part of the implementation of the National Renewable Energy Development Programme, reaffirmed Thursday in Algiers Minister of Energy Boutarfa Nourredine.

The Programme aims at reaching 22,000 MW by 2030, which will increase by over 27% electrical power generated from renewable energy sources, said Boutarfa in reply to a question of a deputy of the People's National Assembly on the situation of renewable energies in Algeria.

To that end, a national and international invitation to tender would be launched soon for the production of 4,000MW, he said, adding that the investors should manufacture locally some of the equipment used in converting renewable energy into electrical power, like solar panels.

The minister recalled that the different investments projects, worth DZD120 billion, launched nationwide have so far allowed the production of 400MW, citing the hybrid power plant in Hassi R'mel, which has a production capacity of over 100MW, and the pilot solar power plant in Ghardaia (1.1MW), in addition to 22 solar power plants (343MW) in 14 provinces.

The National Renewable Energy Development Programme will allow to save up 240 billion cubic metres of natural gas, i.e. US$63 billion, over 20 years.
